Costa Rica
Costa Rica as a nature tourism destination almost needs no introduction. It is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world; despite its size (only about the size of the State of Virginia) it has a tremendous variety of flora and fauna. Needless to say, its birdlife is remarkable. With over 900 bird species, including rare and endemic varieties, the country offers ornithologists a diverse and accessible range of habitats, from lush rainforests to coastal regions and highland cloud forests.
It is our aim that holding the joint meeting in this central location within the Americas will also facilitate ornithologists across the hemisphere to attend and form and strengthen collaborations for the benefit of waterbirds and seabirds.
Bringing family or friends? Please note that the Night at the Museum Cultural Event is open to family and friends (children included), thanks to the generosity of our Costa Rican host organizations. We would appreciate knowing about these extra attendees at the event in advance. Plus, we can also help connect families with children at the conference! Travel
Juan Santamaría International Airport provides convenient access for travelers from around the world. The airport is served by multiple major airlines. There are nonstop flights from major cities such as Toronto, New York, Atlanta, Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Juan, Mexico City, Bogota and Quito.
Costa Rica has a well-maintained road network, including highways and paved roads, making it easy to travel by car or bus. Additionally, domestic flights are available for longer distances. Rental cars and car services (e.g., Didi, Uber) are readily available; it is highly recommended to use the orange taxis. The official language in Costa Rica is Spanish but staff in most of the hotels and travel agencies speak English. Currency is the Costa Rica colón, but dollars are accepted almost everywhere.

The "Run of the House Room" includes either 1 king or 2 double beds and is $218 per night; the "Guest Room" includes 2 double beds and is $238 per night. The room block closed on December 5, 2024.
Located in the middle of a vibrant 12-acre coffee plantation, this magnificent 5-star hotel captures all the elegance of a colonial hacienda from the 16th century. This hotel is only 10 minutes away from the International San Jose Airport (easily accessible for taxis, Didi/Uber, and pre-scheduled shuttle transportation). There are two other Marriott-owned hotels near the conference venue hotel. AC Hotel San Jose Airport Belen is a short walk away (700 meters) from the venue hotel. City Express by Marriott San José Costa Rica is about 5 miles further from the airport, closer to the historic city center (room rates are closer to $100/night). There are also many condo, apartment, and guest house options nearby, some at prices of <$50/night, available on sites like AirBnB or Vrbo.
